Love Local

We want to change the way people shop, cook and eat!

We're helping people access affordable locally produced food, and learn how to cook healthy meals.

fresh local fruit and vegWith over 25% of Peterborough’s population classified as obese encouraging healthy diets is essential - locally grown food is healthier and more environmentally friendly.

The further food travels to reach your plate the more chemicals it needs to preserve it while it’s transported and stored. These chemicals are bad for the environment and for your health. The smaller the distance food travels the fresher and tastier it will be, plus less energy and fuel is used.

There are lots of benefits if you choose local food:

  • Reduced food miles (the distance that food has to travel to reach us),
  • Excellent value for food produced to high environmental and welfare standards,
  • Producers gain a fairer price for their goods,
  • Fresher and tastier food.

We've gathered together tools to help you Love Local...

Some useful websites:

BBC-Health:Nutrition - A good diet is central to overall good health, but do you know the best foods to include in your meals, and those best avoided? This website looks at the facts, to help you make realistic, informed choices.
British Nutrition Foundation - Provides nutrition information for teachers, health professionals, scientists, and general public. Publications, conferences and educational resources.
Change4Life - Change4Life has loads of healthy eating tips and recipes, and fun ways to exercise. Change4Life is here to help you and your kids eat well and move more.
Eat the Seasons - Seasonal food information, tips and recipe ideas, updated every week.
Five-a-day - Why five a day is important and how you can get your five portions of fruit and veg.
Food Standards Agency - UK Government body shows current research in food safety, nutrition and food-related disease, with notes on scientific surveys, enforcement of good practice.
Friends of the Earth - Find out how you can help to 'Fix the Food Chain' by joining this fresh new campaign.
Greeniversity - Greeniversity offers a range of free courses taught by ordinary people. There are courses about how to grow your own veg, how to knit, how to customise charity shop clothes, how to ride (and service) your bike, and even how to insulate your loft.
Food Facts - Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming advocates food and agriculture policies and practices that enhance the health and welfare of people and animals, improve the working and living environment, enrich society and culture and promote equity.

Cono Sur

We are delighted that organic winery Cono Sur is supporting the Green Festival 2010.

The company is committed to reducing environmental impact - producing delicious wines that don't cost the earth. You can get your hands on Cono Sur wines from Waitrose and Majestic Wine in Peterborough.

According to Nicola Hale UK Brand Manager from organic winery Cono Sur, customers play an important role in persuading businesses to take their environmental responsibilities seriously....

We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment so that we can provide our customers with products that don’t cost the earth. Our wines are farmed and harvested entirely without the use of man-made chemicals, whether in the form of fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides or fungicides.

“We like doing things the natural way and for over ten years have been focussing on sustainably managing our vineyards. In 2007 we became the first winery in the world to obtain CarbonNeutral® delivery status which means the CO2 emissions from the shipping of our products have been measured and balanced to net zero through Greenhouse Gas Emissions reduction projects.

“A green approach results in healthier fruit and top quality wines. Our employees really embody our environmental ethos using bicycles to travel around the vineyards. Amongst the lush vines, lots of bicycles can be found, resting against walls and propped up on the end of rows of vines. Relaxed, taking their time, and enjoying the journey: sometimes returning to bicycle basics is all we need.”

Cycling the Nassaburgh Trail with a BBQ at Willow Brook Farm

This leisurely 13 mile circular route takes in some of western Peterborough’s most scenic countryside and picturesque rural villages including: Castor, Ailsworth and Marholm. You will also pass Castor Hanglands Nature Reserve, where you can still see remnants of the historic hunting forest of Nassaburgh.  The road is predominantly on quiet lanes and country roads, but some negotiation of busier roads is required, therefore whilst this route is perfect for families, we would recommend only confident cyclists to attend.

The cycle ride will be led by Sustrans Rangers and Travelchoice staff, with a BBQ and other refreshments planned at Willow Brook Farm (at your own expense), approximately half way round.

Free Travelchoice goodies available for all who attend. For catering purposes if you are interesting in attending the ride, please e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
