Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) has delivers groundbreaking and innovative projects of local, regional and national significance. We are working for a cleaner, greener, healthier city, enabling change for a sustainable future.
In December this year, when homes across the UK are digging out decorations, buying presents and hanging lights, world leaders from 192 countries will meet at the United Nations Climate Change Conference between 7th-18th December 2009.
Green Day is an annual event in Peterborough where people across the city wear an item of green clothing to show their support for Peterborough's ambition to create the UK's Environment Capital.
Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) was commissioned by Queensgate Shopping Centre to conduct a comprehensive audit of waste management operations at the Centre.
Forty pupils from six schools across Peterborough are making music from rubbish as part of a project which aims to show that, with a little imagination, things we throw away can be re-used.
Matching schools with volunteers from local businesses to create exciting outdoor classrooms with vegetable patches, ponds, flowerbeds and wildlife corners.
Peterborough has been named one of the six UK cities to trial innovative methods of waste management and reduction as part of the government's Zero Waste Places scheme.
We want to change the way people shop, cook and eat!
We're helping people access affordable locally produced food, and learn how to cook healthy meals.
With over 25% of Peterborough’s population classified as obese encouraging healthy diets is essential - locally grown food is healthier and more environmentally friendly.
The further food travels to reach your plate the more chemicals it needs to preserve it while it’s transported and stored. These chemicals are bad for the environment and for your health. The smaller the distance food travels the fresher and tastier it will be, plus less energy and fuel is used.
There are lots of benefits if you choose local food:
Reduced food miles (the distance that food has to travel to reach us),
Excellent value for food produced to high environmental and welfare standards,
Producers gain a fairer price for their goods,
Fresher and tastier food.
We've gathered together tools to help you Love Local...

Opportunity Peterborough is a key partner in delivering Peterborough's aspiration to become the UK's Environment Capital.
The city's Urban Regeneration Company is ensuring that growth is delivered sustainably to make sure Peterborough is the natural choice for companies seeking a location to build a business and for individuals or families seeking a home.
We are delighted that organic winery Cono Sur is supporting the Green Festival 2010.
The company is committed to reducing environmental impact - producing delicious wines that don't cost the earth. You can get your hands on Cono Sur wines from Waitrose and Majestic Wine in Peterborough.
According to Nicola Hale UK Brand Manager from organic winery Cono Sur, customers play an important role in persuading businesses to take their environmental responsibilities seriously....
We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment so that we can provide our customers with products that don’t cost the earth. Our wines are farmed and harvested entirely without the use of man-made chemicals, whether in the form of fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides or fungicides.
“We like doing things the natural way and for over ten years have been focussing on sustainably managing our vineyards. In 2007 we became the first winery in the world to obtain CarbonNeutral® delivery status which means the CO2 emissions from the shipping of our products have been measured and balanced to net zero through Greenhouse Gas Emissions reduction projects.
“A green approach results in healthier fruit and top quality wines. Our employees really embody our environmental ethos using bicycles to travel around the vineyards. Amongst the lush vines, lots of bicycles can be found, resting against walls and propped up on the end of rows of vines. Relaxed, taking their time, and enjoying the journey: sometimes returning to bicycle basics is all we need.”
This years green festival calendar is jam-packed full of exciting activities for all the family to enjoy. Click on the dates in pink to the left to see what's on each day or come back here soon when you will be able to download the programme.

The Green Festival 2011 will mark 20 years of the event in Peterborough. Running for two weeks during May/June 2011 the Green Festival could be an ideal opportunity to get your green message across.
Reach thousands of local people from across Cambridgeshire
Get people thinking about green issues
Demonstrate your green credentials and commitment to the community
“Each year the Green Festival exceeds my expectations. It provides a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to reach the general public, raise profile, and be linked with such a great cause with such ambitious aims”.
Nicholas Watts, Vine House Farm, Sponsor of the Green Festival
“Funding the Green Festival provides an ideal opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to our Corporate Social Responsibility: the environment, the community and innovation. One of the many unique things about this event is that our staff can get involved and make a real difference; as one of the largest local employers this is really important.”
Annette Johnson, Press Officer, Perkins, Principal partners of the Green Festival
Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), Peterborough City Council, and the Greater Peterborough Partnership have developed a short video based on Al Gore’s climate change film An Inconvenient Truth.
Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) working with Peterborough City Council surveyed over 700 local residents as part of a project to overhaul textiles recycling in Peterborough.
Warm Homes Peterborough, PECT’s community-based fuel poverty project, has entered its second year and is now offering free home visits to Registered Social Landlord tenants in the neighbourhoods of Paston, Ravensthorpe and East ward (as well as continuing to work with tenants in Dogsthorpe and Central ward).
Green Energy Switch is a website to help people in Peterborough switch to a green energy supplier, find hints and tips on living sustainably, learn about saving energy in the home, and explore home renewable energy options.
As part of the Green Festival and Peterborough in Bloom 2009 Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) and Peterborough City Council organised an exhibition in local libraries to showcase the gardening projects taking place in the city's schools.
Thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) a new project will launch in Peterborough later this year to help ensure Peterborough has the skills and experience needed to ensure the city’s heritage and natural environment is looked after in the future.
Many organisations in Peterborough are already taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint. Here are some simple steps you can take which will make a real impact on the environment and your bottom line.

Cycling the Nassaburgh Trail with a BBQ at Willow Brook Farm
Who
Travelchoice, Peterborough City Council
Where
Bretton Centre (outside the entrance to Bretton Centre / Sainsburys entrance)
What
This leisurely 13 mile circular route takes in some of western Peterborough’s most scenic countryside and picturesque rural villages including: Castor, Ailsworth and Marholm. You will also pass Castor Hanglands Nature Reserve, where you can still see remnants of the historic hunting forest of Nassaburgh. The road is predominantly on quiet lanes and country roads, but some negotiation of busier roads is required, therefore whilst this route is perfect for families, we would recommend only confident cyclists to attend.
The cycle ride will be led by Sustrans Rangers and Travelchoice staff, with a BBQ and other refreshments planned at Willow Brook Farm (at your own expense), approximately half way round.
Free Travelchoice goodies available for all who attend. For catering purposes if you are interesting in attending the ride, please e-mail
