I'm the Business and Environment Officer for Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT). I am working on the Business Clusters Project which supports and advices businesses in Fengate and Cygnet on how to save money by being as efficient as possible. Looking at anything from waste to water and turning rubbish into recyclables, I help business work together to be as environmentally friendly as possible. My pet environmental hate is quite simple really... I'm a chap who enjoys his food - I like nothing better than sausage, mash, peas and onion gravy. So it really upsets me to see people leaving food on their plates and then pouring it into the bin. Not only does this annoy me as I hate to see lovely food going to waste, but because of the double environmental damage that is being done with every wasted mouthful... Getting food from around the world and onto our plates involves huge amounts of carbon emissions. From chopping down the Amazon to graze our beef burgers, to flying in sacks of rice from the Ganges delta, the carbon output of the food cycle is enormous. But then to waste that food as well... Those lonely lumps of mashed potato that get scraped into the bin at the end of a meal usually end up in a landfill, where they degrade and release carbon back into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. So next time your peeling those spuds, leave a couple in the bag for another day... My top green tip is to buy a bike. Having recently hopped on the saddle - a twenty pound purchase from eBay - I have discovered the joys of cycling around. It's quicker than driving in city centres (especially if you make the most of Peterborough's Green Wheel), it's a whole lot cheaper and it's better for you. Since I bought my bike I've started using notches on my belt I didn't even know were there. |
