Copenhagen update - blog one

So, my own little pilgrimage begins...

The news has been full of Copenhagen over the last few weeks and whether good or bad news, people are talking more about Climate Change. I am still not convinced that people are convinced though and I just hope that landmark events like Copenhagen are treated with the importance that they deserve.

We often seem to miss those really life changing events, or at least we don`t miss them but we don't learn from them. If ever there was a case in point, its the banking collapse. Surely the complete capitulation of our financial institutions should have suggested that there might just be a better way to do the whole economy thing.

But alas, we hear that “it will take the economy years to get back to where it was”.....where it was?....thats what got us into this mess in the first place! Anyhow I digress.

I have before me 26 hours of pure unadulterated, carbon-guilt-free hell as for my chosen passage to Denmark I opted for a train, bus, coach combo. Three times more expensive and about 6 times as long as flying – but at least my conscious is clear, or clearer anyway. It just highlights some of the challenges we face in promoting more sustainable lifestyles.

How can we justify the additional costs of not flying, how can encourage someone to spend 26 hours on public transport? As for cost - I am no scientist but gravity dictates that getting a massive hunk of metal about 30,000 feet in the air should be more expensive than driving it along a road, do basic laws of energy not apply?

Ahhh, theres an interesting question to ponder, if scientific laws don`t always apply, who writes the rules? Who dictates how the world operates? Perhaps they might be able to sort out the climate change issue?

If you know the answer perhaps you could point them in the direction of Copenhagen, the coach leaves Victoria coach station at 14.30.

Nick, why bother going to Copenhagen? It just makes the politicians on their very well-paid, luxurious, mutual-back-slapping-fest think they are important. They're not. Why feed their inflated egos?

You're right re: the financial crisis, though. Time for a localised banking system!
