Yesterday was Peterborough's Green Day where the city celebrates its ambition to become the UK's Environment Capital.

Local people and businesses got on board by wearing green and 'cutting out a kilo of CO2'.

Staff from Media Matters opted for sustainable travel for the day whilst the team from Anne Corder Recruitment took a range of small actions which added up to make a big impact...

Paul Smith, Managing Director, said, “I’m proud of our green credentials, but there’s always room for improvement. Which is why we signed up to support the Green Day challenge to cut out a kilo of CO2!”

quote marksDirector of Protect & Preserve Ltd Stephen Everett supported Green Day by working from home. He said, "My return journey, usually by car, is 62 miles, saving stacks of CO2. Where possible, more employers should consider allowing certain staff to work from home, even if it is only 1 day a week."

Blue Dolphin, Accent Nene, and MHJ Electrical also went green for Green Day!

Peterborough’s Green Day celebrates the city’s growing reputation as the UK’s Environment Capital, marking the day when local leaders launched the green aspiration in November last year.

Following the success of Green Day 2008, this year we are encouraging local businesses to show their support for Peterborough’s eco ambition on 18th November 2009 by:

  • Taking simple steps to Cut a Kilo of CO2 on the day; and
  • Advertising that they are doing this by wearing an item of green clothing.

We're setting a national lead by asking businesses to ‘Cut a Kilo’ on Green Day and we've enlisted the help of carbon offsetting experts The CarbonNeutral Company to provide resources for organisations taking part.

There will be lot's of resources available to help businesses who want to 'Cut a Kilo' including:
  • a free online carbon calculator
  • a 'Cut a Kilo' toolkit
  • the opportunity for media coverage for businesses taking part.

Cutting a Kilo is easier than you might think. You could could encourage employees to cycle to work instead of driving (cycling instead of driving for 3 miles saves a kilo of CO2), or turn your PC monitor off at lunchtime (130 people doing this for 45 mins saves a kilo).

If you are interested in taking part and would like more information, register for updates by contacting Nyree Ambarchian:

We're working with Cycle Maps UK and Nikki's Eco Products to offer fab discounts and give-aways for people taking part.

This year we're also working with The Carbon Carbon Neutral CompanyNeutral Company to help businesses cut a kilo of CO2 on the day.

We're developing tools and resources to help - watch this space!
