Calling all businesses in and around the city. Peterborough has launched its own accreditation for businesses.

The scheme was launched by Leader of Peterborough City Council, Cllr Marco Cereste and covered by BBC Look East film crew on 15th April at the Eco Innovation Centre in Peterborough.

Marco Cereste head of the council presenting Crightons of peterborough with their Environmental accreditation certificate

Investors in the Environment will provide businesses with a framework for cutting their environmental impact and an accreditation stamp for achieving different levels of environmental awareness – bronze level (taking the first simple steps), silver, and then green level (being a green leader for your city) which a lot of businesses are already doing but arent shouting about.

Its environmental accreditation built around the needs of business. The idea behind Investors in the Environment is to encourage businesses in the Peterborough area to get smarter when it comes to using resources and producing waste. Not only will this reduce their environmental impact, but it will also save them money.

Twenty businesses have already started the Investors in the Environment accreditation process and a further 350 have pledged their support for the scheme.

The scheme is being led by green charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, Opportunity Peterborough, Greater Peterborough Partnership and Peterborough City Council. It is being supported by green heavyweights including The Environment Agency, commercial and residential energy management consultants WTG Associates, and local recycling company Donarbon Ltd. Together, the organisations hope Investors in the Environment will further embed Peterborough’s growing reputation as the UK’s Environment Capital.

Cllr Marco Cereste, Leader of Peterborough City Council said: “I’m delighted to be launching Investors in the Environment on 15th April and presenting certificates to the businesses who have already achieved accreditation.

“Peterborough’s business community is strongly behind the city’s aspiration to become the UK’s Environment Capital and now many of them are demonstrating their support in terms of real carbon savings.”

BusinessWatch UK Security Services Limited based in Orton Southgate is the first company to sign up to Investors in the Environment. “Being green is easier than you think and is morally and financially rewarding” says Managing Director, Richard Olsen. “With sound support and guidance from Investors in the Environment, I was able to ensure we had the right systems in place and achieve accreditation for our great work”.

Kim Coley with WTG associates the energy and smart metering specialists

Investors in the Environment is offering advice and information to the businesses sector in the form of events too. Working with the Envirocluster, the largest cluster of environment products and services in the UK we have already launched a number of free events for businesses to take part and learn from. The first being Print reduction seminar from Admirals Print solutions, and Smart metering technology and advice from WTG Associates.

Tons of mud and melting snow may be an Icelandic mud-wrestlers dream,  but unfortunately not to our group of intrepid firewalkers, who have had their event postponed this week.

The event, due to be held this Sunday by local Firewalking innovator and motivational speaker Steve Consalvez has had to be put forward to the 14th February, because builders were unable to finish works to the event venue in Thorney because of the recent adverse weather conditions.

The Seminar, created in 1995 which has been copied and duplicated around the world, is one where a long firebed of 6-9 paces is created with heat, at temperatures hot enough to melt lead, tin and even aluminium.  After taking the seminar, participants then simply feel confident enough to walk through fire.  In the seminar, participants learn how to control their physical state and their emotional state, and are then given some exercises to help them produce their chosen states, “on demand”.  This then enables them to reproduce the right approach to any challenges they have identified for themselves.  The test, is to take the state called “confident action”, and when faced with a fear like fire, instead of running away, they just confidently and casually walk along the firebed unharmed.

“I was really looking forward to performing the “FIRESTAND””, said Steve.  “This is where we blow the scientific explanation away.”  As recent as last year, so called scientists have suggested that there are scientific principles which explain why this is possible, but the Firestand completely contradicts the science.

Steve said “We could go ahead, if everything goes well with the construction company, but it would then mean letting dozens of people down with virtually no notice- something I’m not willing to do”

We have had interest again from several charities, but they have agreed that safety comes first, so we will have an even bigger group on February 14th, which WILL go ahead.  Don’t forget, if you are raising money for charity, the ticket price reduces by £100, to just £49, which is £50 lower than we charged in 1995!

See you all on Valentines day-bring your loved one, or the one you want to be your loved one!!

Reducing Packaging Workshop:
How to use design to reduce waste and costs

Wednesday 3 February 2010
Venue TBC
9.00am – 1.00pm (including a buffet lunch)

Did you know that you could SAVE MONEY by packaging your goods more efficiently, without compromising on design?

At this free, half-day workshop we will be explaining how by considering the environmental impact of your packaging from the very first stages of the design process, you can save money by cutting down on waste while still producing innovative and attractive packaging that can be re-used or recycled afterwards.

Experts will provide practical tips and advice on all aspects of the process, from how to choose the right partners to work with through to your company’s legal requirements under the Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations, which were introduced in 2003.

Not only will attending this seminar help you to save money, it will also help you to manage your company’s environmental credentials while providing you with a fresh outlook on the wide selection of materials that are available for consideration.

We’re also inviting everyone who attends to bring along examples of the designs and packaging materials your company currently uses so that you can share ideas on how they can be improved upon to help your company on its way to becoming more efficient.

Cost: Free to attend including lunch (but places are limited)

I was talking to a lovely gentleman today called Steve Consalvez. He has been using Eastex the materials exchange website to re-home the wood from his chopped trees and obtain some free training room chairs for one of his new ventures.

I quickly realised that I was talking to a well educated but friendly and approachable chap, and found myself asking questions and listening intently not only to what he does for a living, but how he does it and why he does it. I thought I would share his insight with you all...
Steve at Success Formulae profile picture with website address accross the bottom
What could be more rewarding than using your 20 years experience helping people that want it- find their own personal empowerment to achieve their true potential? In turn, helping them to be healthier, happier, stronger and more confident individuals, getting what they want from life. Steve does this in many ways. I mean, how many people actually know that they can get what they want from life? Let alone believe in themselves to get it!? I’m all for personal development on many levels and enjoyed listening to some of his success stories knowing that I had only covered a small percentage of what he has achieved and what he has to offer.

Steve’s company ‘Success Formulae’ has, fortunately for us, moved locally to the outskirts of Peterborough. The company covers everything from life coaching, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy and NLP training, to Leadership and business success training (and thats just SOME of what he does). He has trained with the best around the country, even hypnotised the hypnotist Paul McKenna many years ago.

One of their most popular courses is Firewalking, which I can proudly say i’m going to try at his next course in January.  If I can walk on hot coals over 800 degrees C’ without burning my feet in anyway, anyone can!  See firewalking article for a full lowdown and testimonials.

One of their new seminars is Fear into Action – the empowerment seminar.
Steve says: “When a person is great, they are awesome, but how can you feel great when you need to?
How do the mind and body work together to create the emotions we have?  How can this be controlled?
Some emotional states that our participants created for themselves, at our last seminar, to be available, “on tap”, were:

Confidence, Competence, Negotiation assertiveness, Assertiveness, Dominance, Forgiveness, Apologetic, Calm, Relaxed, Joy, Motivation, Determination, Focus, Wakefulness”

On the 15 minute video, strategy and overall approaches are demonstrated, a shortened view is seen on YouTube.

Seminar is £149 for approx 4 hours.
It is fully guaranteed.  If people do not think it is worth the money, they get a full refund on the night.

The 2 dates are:
17th January 2010.
13th February 2010.

"If you want to raise money for charity, it’s only £49...plus if there’s a group, we’ve done a buy 5, get 2 free, buy 10 get 5 free.  So if you all raise money, and there are 15 of them in a group, they get it for less than £34 each.  We are also donating some of the proceeds to our dedicated charity Animal Helpline, a local canine charity, who’s home is at www.homes4dogs.co.uk."

"If anyone wants a new start to 2010, this could be it!"

I was listening to my Lilly Allen album the other day and was pleasantly surprised when i got to the bonus tracks.

I thought I would share the Lyrics with you:

There's a hole in our logic
There's a hole in the sky
And one day just like magic
We're all going to die
'Cause we didn't turn the lights off
And we didn't take the bus
Even though we know we should have
Oh, silly old us

Well we should have recycled
And saved our resources
While there's still someone else’s
Someone call the armed forces
And we'll blame it on terror
Also known as religion
But we shouldn't feel guilt
For protecting our children

Excuse me, sir
But is this what they call denial
Just to carry on regardless
We'll only do it for a while
We'll carry on straight down the line
Down the road to nowhere
Do you know where it is leading us
And do we even wanna go there

I don't have the answers
I don't know where we start
Start to pick up all the pieces
Of everything we've torn apart
Now, you'd think that we'd be grateful
For the fact we've got a choice
Instead we throw it back at people
Who don't even have a voice

And the teachers always told us
Told us we should love thy neighbor
And my mother always told me
Told me I should vote new labor
But I don't know who to trust
And I just find it all confusing
All as useless as each other
Past the point of being amusing

Excuse me, sir
But is this what they call denial
Just to carry on regardless
We'll only do it for a while
We'll carry on straight down the line
Down the road to nowhere
Do you know where it is leading us
And do we even wanna go there
