A new health walk for PECT’s iphone app ‘Walk Peterborough’ mobile explorer is being developed thanks to sponsorship from Sustainable Transport Team Travelchoice

The new walk will give staff at the City Hospital a chance to stretch their legs for half an hour or so and walk to High Lees Spinney, a small woodland near Bretton Park. Visitors and local residents will also be able to enjoy the walk.

PECT’s Penny Fletcher has been developing the 2km route over the past few weeks with help from some Bretton locals and hospital staff. The photo shows Penny recording the route on a GPS so it can be uploaded to the magic app software and be added to the app store. Her next step is to record the audio guide for app.

In the first week of November hospital staff will be trying the new walk out for size at the exciting launch event!

The app is available to everyone and already features a number of routes in different parts of Peterborough, including health and nature walks with interest points.

Get outdoors and try out the  walks on offer! Download the free Walk Peterborough app now by visiting the online iphone store.

From the 7th to the 14th August there are four sky rides taking place in Peterborough. Whether you prefer a ride which is long or short, fast or slow, there is one to suit you.

With the support of Travelchoice, Sky ride local gives you the opportunity of riding with a group of people under the supervision of two leaders for free. With Peterborough being the UK’s Environment Capital it’s a great way of having fun and keeping the environment healthy.

Visit the Sky ride website for more information for these four rides, there are two on the 7th August and two on the 14th August. It’s a great way of socialising, having fun and keeping fit!

This week local businesses from across Peterborough are competing in the ‘Miles Better Business Challenge.’ There are fantastic prizes to win for the greenest and healthiest performers.

Like many others, today I ditched the car and opted for sustainable transport. With the sun shining I decided to travel by bicycle! I’d like to boast that it was a gallant effort, but in fact my commute was really enjoyable, leisurely and a great way to start the day.

Using the Green Wheel map and Travelchoice website it was easy to plan my route. We are fortunate to have such fantastic travel infrastructure in place. I am looking forward to trying other ‘green’ journeys this week. Another bonus is that by cycling, today I saved £2.74 in car expenses!

I am doing my bit…fingers crossed PECT come out top!! Good luck!

PECT welcomes everyone to tomorrow’s launch of Peterborough Green Festival.

See you there!

Make sure you head to the Stage Bus hosted by Heart FM’s Kev and Roz. The Stage Bus is a unique double-decker bus that transforms into a festival stage! Theatre, music and dance entertainment will be going on throughout the day. Don’t forget to listen out for the hourly announcement of bike winners!

At the launch you’ll also be able to admire the award-winning electric car ‘Nissan LEAF’. Play a pedal-powered Scalextric game and see if you can get the best score for the day. ‘Cycle the world’ from Peterborough city centre on a bike simulator. Competitive adults and children can take part in the Rollapaluza static bike race challenge.

During the Green Festival fortnight there are evening bike rides, health walks and Nordic walking taster sessions. Peterborough Local Access Forum and Peterborough Ramblers are also hosting walks.

On Tuesday 19th January I had the privilege of accepting PECT's Travel Plan Award.

We achieved level 5, which recognises employers who have managed to integrate their travel plan into the culture of their organisation.

To achieve this award PECT delivered a series of measures to encourage staff to travel more sustainably to and from work and during work hours. These measures included:

  • Participating in national travel events, for example, walk to work week
  • Promotion of the local car share scheme
  • Promote the use of staff bicycle and trailer
  • Ask staff that already travel sustainably to calculate cost savings made by choosing this mode of transport (compared to driving)

At the end of the year PECT staff completed a survey which aimed to test whether the measures put in place have been successful in lowering car use. The number of staff driving alone had decreased (compared to 2008 figures) to 33%. This is a great figure but I am sure next year we can make it ever lower!

If you are interested in having a Travel Plan for your organisation contact the Travelchoice team.

As part of PECT’s Travel Plan five members of staff decided to calculate how much money they save by using sustainable modes of transport when travelling to and from work.

Nyree, Rachel, Patrick, Sarah and I save a total of £3,118 each year by choosing to walk, cycle, car share or take the train rather than driving to work.

For me saving money was a bonus to the other benefits I get from cycling and getting the train to work. I love the fact that I get my daily exercise by cycling everyday, plus it wakes you up so I get to work and get home from work with lots of energy. Getting the train gives me time to read or listen to music and is certainly less stressful than sitting in traffic queues.

For those who have never heard of a Travel Plan before it is a package of measures that aim to reduce reliance on the car by emphasising the alternatives. PECT, with support from Peterborough City Council’s Travelchoice team, has been working on its Travel Plan since 2005. In one year PECT staff have reduced their car usage by 5%, while walking, car sharing and train use have all increased.

Other measures that PECT has implemented since its Travel Plan began include: purchasing a staff bike and bike trailer, undercover bike racks, encouraging working from home and staff getting involved in national travel events. One hugely successful event was In Town Without My Car day. PECT staff were treated to breakfast if they left their car at home, 53% of staff took part. This has now become an annual event.

If your business would like a Travel Plan contact the Travelchoice team.

PECT top tips for sustainable travel:
  • Calculate how much you would save by using an alterative mode of transport to and from work.
  • Start small – if you choose to walk or cycle as your preferred method of sustainable transport start small, one day a week to begin with and increase it over time.
  • If you are interested in car sharing log onto the Peterborough car share website.
