Up and coming courses!

Want to get involved with something new and fun in a friendly environment, then join in with Greeniversity on the 6th and 7th August.

On the 6th August there is the John Clare short walk. This starts at the John Clare Cottage and is an easy walk for any ability or age. It starts at 10am and will finish at the cottage in time for lunch. Well-known local walker Frieda Gosling will be leading the walk around Clare’s Countryside. You will get to read some poetry, see wildlife and enjoy the landscape. It’s free so go along and get involved!

On the 7th August is Laughter Yoga. Starting at 2pm and going on for around an hour, this is a great chance to enjoy yoga while having a laugh. This unqiue exercise programme is designed to work you chuckle muscles. It’s guaranteed to be a giggle and costs only £4, so get down to the Green Backyard and have a laugh.

From the 27 July to the 9 August I’ll be carrying out work experience at PECT, for me this time isn’t only to benefit my journalism course and experience the marketing side of a company, but to also broaden my horizons on environmental issues.

During my placement I hope to experience what it is like to be part of a working environment and the day to day running of a charity. It will be interesting to see how I manage with office distractions such as chatting! At university when you need to write an essay you simply go by yourself to the library or your room, whereas at work I am sure it’s harder to escape the social distractions. Another thing I am hoping to experience is the relationship and involvement PECT has with the media. As an environmental organisation it’s vital PECT get coverage in the local paper, radio etc, to communicate with the public. In a nutshell from the working side, I’m hoping that I finish the 2 weeks with a huge amount of experience and knowledge gained, if I can learn or improve in at least 2 or 3 aspects of what I need in for my future career I will feel as though my time will have been hugely beneficial.

We are looking for keen volunteers to teach, or assist with the teaching, of a ‘Green Skill’ to adults with learning difficulties, disabilities and/or mental health problems.

Greeniversity is a pioneering community project, offering free informal adult learning opportunities. It brings local people together to share knowledge in a fun, friendly atmosphere.

After a hearty year of courses such as knitting, bee keeping and organic facial products, Greeniversity is expanding, adding a new project focus.

Supported by the Santander Foundation, PECT is delivering 25 free summer courses specifically aimed at adults with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and/or mental health problems.

‘Green Skills’ are anything that can help people be more environmentally-friendly or lead a healthier, active lifestyle! Sharing your know-how will be a valuable, fun and rewarding experience!

No formal experience is required, and support is provided to ensure you feel prepared and confident. A venue, equipment and limited fund
s are available to cover course costs.
