I’ve just come from a Love Local workshop at the Sure Start Drop-in at Central Avenue Dogsthorpe. Love Local is PECT’s innovative new project which helps people in Peterborough combat obesity and its associated health risks by educating people about the benefits of using fresh, seasonal local produce.
This morning I was working with the ladies from the Parents United group and we made (then ate) a healthy pizza. Pizza I hear you say ‘how can that be healthy?’ Well you see the thing is with pizza is this, if you make a nice fresh pizza using a homemade wholemeal low fat base, lots of fresh, seasonal vegetables and a limited amount of low fat cheese then serve the pizza with salad (no not chips or garlic bread!) it is actually a fantastic way to get your ‘five a day’ fibre, protein and calcium and a great way to introduce children to cooking and eating good quality nutritious food.
This morning’s veg topping consisted of tomatoes, sweetcorn, peppers, mushrooms and onion and we used fresh basil, chives and parsley. The meat eaters were able to add some nice lean British ham which was really delicious.
All of the herbs and the veg (except the basil) were grown in the UK and the low fat cheese was English. The benefits of choosing and using seasonal and local produce are numerous. Your health is improved because the food is more nutritious as it has been left to ripen for longer and stored for less time. The environmental benefits are considerable as food miles are cut, and less pesticides are used and local food supports the local economy by supporting local farmers so it’s a win win situation for everyone.
So next time you go shopping make sure you take into consideration the impact of your choice and choose local for fresh, nutritious, great quality produce.
The first Love Local cooking demonstrations were a real success for PECT’s Love Local team. The demonstrations, which took place in Peterborough’s newly refurbished cathedral square, allowed the Trust's Janine Starling to put her fabulous cookery skills to the test when she demonstrated how to cook some great seasonal recipes using locally sourced food. Broad beans on toast, spinach and herb frittata and rhubarb and strawberry compote were the featured recipes which were wolfed down eagerly by an army of school children and passersby.
The benefits of eating local food which is in season extend far beyond the good value these products prove to be, especially if they are bought from one of the city’s markets. When you buy local not only are you saving food miles, supporting local farmers and helping the British economy you are eating the most nutritious and tasty food when it was made to be eaten. Who wants winter strawberries that taste of water? Not me!
The next Love Local demonstrations take place on Monday 16th August at Fulbridge rec as part of a healthy BBQ event. I’m really pleased with this theme as it coincides with the Greeniversity course, BBQ heaven, which I taught a few weeks ago at the city college. A good BBQ has all the usual meats, fish & quorn products but a great BBQ is made by the quality of its salads!
So if you want to know how to make a salsa, a great couscous salad or Janine’s famous beetroot salad join me Monday morning (16/08/10) at Fulbridge rec.
Yum, yum, yum,
