Support for the Forest for Peterborough
Local organisations show their support for Peterborough Environment City Trust’s (PECT’s) vision to create a new Forest for Peterborough.

Dobbies Garden World Peterborough in Hampton has donated tools and equipment to PECT as part of the green charity’s mission to plant a tree for every person in the city.

Mandy Wright, Community Champion for Dobbies, Peterborough is pleased that the donation gardening equipment has been put to good use by staff at PECT. She said, “Making sure volunteers have the right tools to plant as many trees as possible is really important and we’re happy to do our bit to help create this lasting environmental legacy for the city.”

The donation was made as part of Dobbies’ Here We Grow community campaign which offers free equipment, support and expertise to the local community to help them transform outdoor spaces.

The donated equipment is already being put to good use. In November, Cross Keys Homes along with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Probation Trust planted 200 trees in Fengate, Gunthorpe, Westwood and Ravensthorpe. The new trees as well as shrubs have been sited around homes owned by Cross Keys Homes for the benefit of their tenants and the wider community. Cross Keys Homes is a long-standing supporter of the Forest for Peterborough and a further 200 trees will be planted by the housing association as part of a community event in February 2012.

Michael Howes, Community Payback Manager, from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Probation Trust is delighted to have been involved in the project, he said: “Community Payback is all about giving something back to the local community and helping offenders to repay the community for the wrong they have done. It’s a great way of showing the general public that this really does work. The tree planting was a good example of how Community Payback works in practice – giving offenders new skills and resulting in environmental improvement for future generations to enjoy.”

The Forest for Peterborough aims to plant 170,000 trees over 20 years and increase the range of habitats in the city such as grassland and hedgerow to create green corridors to allow wildlife to flourish.
