Plugged in P'boro

Local businesses could host electric vehicle charging points...

A seminar on Monday 20th September will give businesses the chance to find out about how they could host one of Peterborough’s new electric vehicle charging points.

The seminar follows news that an East of England an example of an electric car and charging pointconsortium, including Peterborough City Council and green charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) has been successful in an initial ‘expression of interest’ in being part of a £30 million ‘Plugged in Places’ initiative which will bring a network of recharging points for electric vehicles to the region.

Now the consortium has been asked to develop a detailed business case for a £5.4 million network of recharging points in the East. If successful, this will see Peterborough pioneer the latest developments in ultra-low carbon electric vehicles boosting the city’s Environment Capital aspirations.

Hugh Cripps, Chief executive of PECT, is calling for businesses to attend the seminar and support this ground-breaking scheme. “If chosen as one of the pilot projects, the East of England scheme would see around 500 charging points established in Peterborough, Bedford, Cambridge, Norwich, Ipswich, Luton, Thames Gateway and London Stansted airport within two years plus another 100 in the third year. The scheme will provide charging posts at public, private and on-street parking locations, leisure and retail sites and transport interchanges.

“As part of the detailed business plan we’re putting together we need to identify businesses that could host charging points and help us fast-track green infrastructure in Peterborough.

“There are a range of benefits for businesses who get involved in this scheme. For example attracting customers that drive electric vehicles, demonstrating their green credentials in a high profile way, the kudos of being on the cutting edge of environmental developments, not to mention being at the centre of Peterborough’s Environment Capital aspirations.”

The free seminar will be held at the Eco Innovation Centre in Peterborough’s City Centre between 11.30am and 12.30pm and will be led by Ian McDonald from Future Transport Systems.

The seminar will give businesses the chance to find out more about the electric vehicle charging posts and how purchasing electric vehicles could benefit them.

Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) is a charity set up following Peterborough’s designation as a UK Environment City in 1992. PECT carries out research and implements practical projects to protect and improve the environment. Our mission at PECT is to lead and support the city in delivering growth and regeneration in a truly environmentally sustainable way. As a successful charity we work with a wide variety of stakeholders to make a difference for our environment – through innovation, enterprise and commitment to action on the ground. PECT has a strong track record of delivering projects of regional and national significance. It has a staff of 35 working on initiatives from green spaces to business environmental management to sustainable communities and lifestyles.

Additional Information: The East of England Development Agency (EEDA) has coordinated development of the proposal with support from more than 50 businesses and local authorities throughout the region.

The government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) hopes that the Plugged in Places project will stimulate faster development and adoption of electric vehicles and act as a catalyst in the development of new technologies, services and industries. The East of England’s low carbon industry forms nine per cent of the UK market and is worth in excess of £10 billion.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) currently cost around a fifth more than an equivalent petrol or diesel vehicle due to the additional cost of the battery, electric motor and associated equipment. Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), if primarily used for short journeys powered by the on-board battery, achieve large greenhouse gas emission savings. ‘Full’ Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) face similar barriers to widespread adoption as PHEVs, with infrastructure, public perception and battery issues all magnified. Extended Range Electric Vehicles (E-REV) are primarily an electric vehicle but also utilise a small internal combustion engine that drives an alternator to generate electricity.
