Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) working with Peterborough City Council surveyed over 700 local residents as part of a project to overhaul textiles recycling in Peterborough.
The project researched the ways people currently recycle textiles and investigated a range of schemes to improve textile recycling locally.
This included:
- Doorstep collections,
- Textile banks,
- Textile recycling at work and at school.
The project found that whilst 91% of people regularly recycle textiles, there is a need for further education about where people should take old textiles and how they are recycled. Items like towels, rugs and duvets were less likely to be recycled because people were uncertain where to take them.
The project also found that people would be more likely to recycle unwanted textiles if local collections were made available.
"This project will make it easier for local people to recycle their textiles and reduce pressure on landfill.”
Paul Pace, Section Head of Environmental Management, Peterborough City Council.
