This project helps local residents change their behaviour to live in a more environmentally friendly way.
Project officers visit local people at home to carry out a short survey to establish current behavioural patterns, environmental interests, and community needs.
Officers provide advice about environmental issues such as energy and water efficiency, making gardens wildlife friendly and sustainable transport.
Residents are left with a ‘Sustainable Living Bag’ full of eco friendly products and information.
The project also identifies any environmental issues in the area and works with partner organisations to meet these needs.
Project officers organise environmental events and activities within the communities, in response to the interests expressed by the residents.
Six to eight months after the initial visit residents are surveyed to track the lifestyle changes they have made.
Hampton and Sugar Way…
The first, three year, phase of the project saw 950 residents in the Hampton and Sugar Way areas of Peterborough make long-term changes in behaviour to live more sustainably.
100% of participating residents made long-term lifestyle changes: 45% started walking instead of driving for short journeys, 27% reduced the amount of waste they produce, 33% made their garden more wildlife friendly, 47% started using reusable cloth shopping bags.
The project has been dubbed the ‘blueprint for behaviour change’, establishing best practice in sustainable living and community cohesion:
Changing behaviour and achieving sustainable living
Tackling local environmental issues such as recycling and fly-tipping
Fostering and maintaining community cohesion and good neighbouring
Supporting local economies by promoting local business and a sustainable local food system
Dogsthorpe…
The project also visited 500 homes in the Dogsthorpe area of Peterborough carrying out sustainable living surveys and helping residents save energy, use sustainable transport, and save water.
