The Green Festival free film screening of Sharkwater (PG) was a fantastic success! The event generated important awareness and support for a worthy cause and raised an incredible £130 in donations for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Peterborough Environment City Trust and sponsors Royal Haskoning would like to thank everyone involved.
A full audience gathered at John Clare Theatre to watch Peterborough’s film premiere of this international multi-award winning film. Stunning cinematography exposed how illegal fishing has seriously depleted shark numbers, threatening the hierarchy of marine life. The fascinating adventure debunked historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters.
What can YOU do to help?
If you have 5 minutes
Support the following organisations/campaigns who are working directly to end the decline in shark populations through illegal fishing and the global shark-finning trade.
If you have 30 minutes
- Write to your MP and ask them to ensure that the British Government takes action to end the flow of shark-derived products into the UK and global trade in shark fins.
- Click here to see a letter which will be sent to MP’s Stewart Jackson and Shailesh Vara. Download, modify and send on – help make a difference!
If you have longer
- Organise a screening of Sharkwater in your town/village/community
- Volunteer with a marine conservation organisation. Get involved and help with the fundraising, promotion, demo’s and campaigns.
- Read Wild Aid’s 2007 report ‘The end of the line – global threats to sharks’ to get a better understanding of the key issues affecting global shark populations.
- Find out if your local chip shop sells Rock Salmon (Squalus acanthias), often referred to as ‘Rock’ – it is actually a critically endangered species of small shark and still legal to sell in the UK. Talk to the manager, provide them with information and ask them to take it off the menu.
- Find your local Chinese restaurants that serve shark fin soup. Talk to the manager, provide them with information, raise your concerns and ask them to take it off the menu.
