Fifteen years ago Peterborough was made one of four UK Environment Cities. Since this time Peterborough has worked hard to
improve its environmental credentials and is committed to creating the UK’s Environment Capital.
Did you know...?
- Peterborough is home to the largest colony of great crested newts in Europe at the Hampton Nature Reserve.
- Peterborough has one of the highest ratios of green space per person in the UK.
- 54% of Peterborough’s schools are currently Eco Schools and local teachers have now laid the challenge for 100% of schools to become Eco Schools by 2010.
- Queensgate Shopping Centre has committed to going green, cutting waste to landfill by 10% and reducing electricity consumption by 30% since 2006.
Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) is working with Greater Peterborough Partnership, Peterborough City Council, Opportunity Peterborough and many other partners towards this aspiration.
For Peterborough, becoming the UK’s Environment Capital will mean a city delivering truly sustainable growth, ensuring a cleaner, greener, healthier and more vibrant Peterborough for the future.
