SUMMARY:Wildlife Training Workshop: Identification of Picture-winged Flies - Old Sulehay (PE8 6PA\,)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 6th July 2019 10am – 4pm \nThis workshop led by John Showers introduces the main families of picture-winged flies and how to identify them.\n\n\nPicture-winged flies is a loose term that refers to several families of fly that have patterned wings. \nThis course introduces the main families involved and will mention other families that might cause confusion. \nThe families covered are the Tephritidae\, Ulidiidae\, Opomyzidae and Pallopteridae. \nMany of these are associated with grasslands\, scrubby areas and some with marshy areas. \nMost species have distinctive wing and thoracic patterns\, so with care can be identified in the field or from good photographs. \nThe Tephritidae cause galls on a number of plants\, especially members of the Asteraceae\, and so are a good group for botanists to study. \nThe Ulidiidae are fairly diverse and contain Northants’ only red data book fly\, the very distinctive Phoenix Fly  Dorycera graminum. \nOpomyzids and Pallopterids are associated with grasses and frequently turn up in sweep nets when surveying grasslands. \nNo prior knowledge of flies will be assumed. \nPrice: £40 Standard; £20 Students; £115 Professionals. \nBooking essential: contact Juliette Butler on 01604 664031 (Tuesdays\, Wednesdays and Fridays 9am – 2.30pm) or at trainingworkshops@wildlifebcn.org to book your place(s) or for further details\, accessibility advice or directions. \nParticipants will receive further information\, including a programme for the day and location details\, nearer the time. \nSuitable  for adults. \nSaturday 6th July 2019 10am – 4pm\n \nOld Sulehay\, Sulehay Road\, 0.5 miles west of the Village\, Yarwell Village\, Northamptonshire\nPE8 6PA. \nA Wildlife Trust BCN Training event.
