SUMMARY:Wild World of Birds: Understanding Intelligence and Behaviour (talk)\, Brampton
DESCRIPTION:Dr Gabrielle Davidson brings an insight into her recent research on Great Tit behaviour and previous work with Corvids. \nCorvids (birds of the crow family) have demonstrated sophisticated\, intelligent behaviour such as tool use. Other birds like great tits have also shown problem solving abilities. Does this mean they are as smart as corvids? \nThis talk will explore how scientists can use experiments and observations of natural behaviours to figure out what exactly birds understand about the world around them. \nDr Gabrielle Davidson is a comparative psychologist and behavioural ecologist studying the evolution of individual differences in cognition in great tits as a post-doctoral researcher at University College Cork\, Ireland. Her doctoral work has  also investigated how wild rooks\, jackdaws and carrion crows recognise threats from competitors and predators. \nSuitable for adults\, beginners\, experts and families. \nCost £ 2.50 \nBooking: Contact Tim Fryer on 07941261346 or at timpfryer@gmail.com to book and for accessibility advice\, further information or directions. \n\nWednesday 14 November 2018 7.30pm – 9pm \nBrampton Memorial Centre\, Thrapston Road\, \, Brampton\, Cambridgeshire\, PE28 4TB \n\nA Wildlife Trust BCN – Huntingdonshire Local Group event.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Jazz: Sara Hawkes and Peter Ravenhill (vocals and guitar)
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime Jazz: Sara Hawkes and Peter Ravenhill (vocals and guitar): Tuesday 13th November 2018 (1pm -1.45pm) \nLast year Sara Hawkes performed at our first ever Tuesdays Till Two lunchtime jazz session (with Ivan Garford on piano). \nThis year she returns with guitarist Peter Ravenhill\, who’s making his Tuesdays Till Two debut after performing at our “Not Quite the Royal Wedding” extravaganza with Sara in May. \nSara will be performing well known jazz and blues standards\, but also some pop plus one of her own compositions. \nAs usual the café will be open from noon\, serving a range of hot drinks and home-made quiche\, cakes\, scones etc. \nAll profits from the café will go to The Green Backyard. \nFor this concert we’d like the audience to stay seated in the café area rather than moving to the pews at the front of the church. \nThe music will begin promptly at 1pm. \nAdmission is FREE\, but those who are able to afford it are asked to make a donation (suggested amount is £5). \nTuesday 13th November 1pm – 1.45pm\n\nSt John the Baptist Church\, Church Street\, Cathedral Square\, Peterborough PE1 1XB\n\nAn Events at St John’s/Green Backyard event.

SUMMARY:"A Ploughman's Tale": recital Robert-John Edwards (Bass-Baritone)/Sara Wilander (piano)
DESCRIPTION:“A Ploughman’s Tale”: recital Robert-John Edwards (Bass-Baritone)/Sara Wilander (piano) Friday\, 9 November 2018 7:30pm – 9:30pm \nTo commemorate the centenary of the end of World War One\, a story of an everyman who fought in the trenches\, told through songs by composers or with words by poets who lived through the time of The Great War. \nPerformed by Robert-John Edwards (Bass-Baritone) and Sara Wilander (Piano). \n\n\nThe concert will take place after a short first half when some local poets will help us to remember the war and some of the local men who took part in it\, and we will remember those commemorated on the two war memorials at St John’s. \n\n\nThere will then be a fifteen minute interval and a chance to view images of Peterborough from the time of the war during it. \nAdvance tickets will be available from the welcome counter in St John’s when the church is open at £8 or online for £8.50 (https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/boxoffice/select/SHyHIoGEsOVd)Tickets will also be available on the door for £10. \n\nDoors open at 7pm.\n\nRefreshments will be provided by The Green Backyard pop-up café team. \nBeginning with Ivor Gurney’s setting of “I Will Go With My Father A-Ploughing” and ending with the heart-breaking setting of Housman’s “Is My Team Ploughing?” by George Butterworth\, himself killed in the trenches\, twenty songs by a variety of composers tell the tale of a ploughboy\, perhaps born around 1890. We start with him as a child\, watching his father plough the fields and learning the farmer’s trade. The songs progress through his youth\, where he becomes ambitious and then meets the girl of his dreams\, woos her\, marries her and has a child. He then joins the army\, singing uplifting war songs before the horrors of the “Great” War begin to bite. He becomes home-sick\, sees death up close and then\, at his last hour\, is desperate to go home. \n\nThe recital also includes a new original setting of McCrae’s “In Flanders’ Fields” composed by Robert-John Edwards.\n\nFriday\, 9 November 2018 7:30pm – 9:30pm \n\n\n\n\n\nSt John the Baptist Church\, Church St\, Cathedral Square \, Peterborough  PE1 1XB \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn Events at St John’s event.
