SUMMARY:"Lazy Circles in the Sky” - a lifetime in conservation (Brampton)
DESCRIPTION:‘Ranger Jim’ aka Jim Stevenson has worked in conservation in many parts of the world\, but is known locally as the senior ranger for Huntingdonshire District Council\, mainly at Paxton Pits. \nHe will give an entertaining talk about his career. \nIn Jim’s own words: “I can’t say I planned my life to be the way it has been; like the midden outside the cowshed\, I just fell into it.   Most of the jobs I have enjoyed did not exist when I was leaving school. They wanted me to be a policeman but I became a teacher of environmental studies. \nMy first conservation job was as education officer to the Wildfowl Trust\, then posts with the RSPB and BirdLife International that took me round the World. \nI had adventures and misadventures. \nEventually I decided to go back to reserve work at Paxton Pits where\, at the age of 68\, I’m now working part time. \nA few years ago I won the BBC Wildlife Magazine Nature Writer of the Year award and the prize I chose was two weeks in Arctic Norway chasing sperm whales around. That was a bit different!” \nSuitable for families\, adults\, beginners and experts. \nCost: £2.50 (accompanied children FREE). \nContact Tim Fryer on 01480 457795 or at timfryer@gmail.com for further information or directions. \n\n\nWednesday 9 January 2019 7.30pm to 9.00pm\n\n\n\nBrampton Memorial Centre\, Thrapston Road\, Brampton\, Cambridgeshire\, PE28 4TB \n\nA Wildlife Trust BCN/Huntingdon Local Group event.

SUMMARY:Midwinter Walk - Ely
DESCRIPTION:Work off the Christmas pudding with the  Ely Local Group as it aims to discover what mid-Winter wildlife can be found around Roswell Pits and the River Great Ouse. \nWith short days\, low temperatures and possible bad weather\, it is tempting to believe that there is little to see in the countryside at this time of year. \nOf course\, that is very far from the truth and with creatures making the most of the limited daylight. \nWinter can be an excellent time to go wildlife watching. \nBittern\, Goosander and Kingfisher are amongst the highlights of previous mid-winter walks and\, whilst they cannot be guaranteed\, there should be plenty of interest around Roswell Pits. \nPaths can be uneven and slippery and muddy if wet. \nNot suitable for people with limited mobility or wheelchair users. \nBooking: contact Will Burdett on 01353 661339 or at willburdett@btinternet.com\n\nFREE event but donations are welcome.\n\nFriday 28 December 2018 10am – 1pm\n\n Cathedral Car Park\, Barton Road\, Ely\, Cambridgeshire CB7 4JE  \n\nA Wildlife Trust BCN /Ely Local Group event.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
