SUMMARY:Metal Peterborough Reading Group with the Growing Together Programme
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to be hosting our next reading group as part of the Growing Together in Peterborough: Exploring and Celebrating Food Systems programme. For this book group we will be exploring ‘The Politics of Permaculture’ by Terry Leahy. \nWe’ll be using the book as a launch pad to learn about what permaculture is as a social movement\, how it could be put into practice\, and how to create new communities that work with nature. There’s no requirement to have read the book\, the book is a starting point to kickstart conversations\, with freedom to see where they go. \nLines and passages will be read out\, offering a chance for people to challenge and delve into topics. The reading group is free to attend and open to all. This is a chance to make new friends\, gain new perspectives and step outside your comfort zone.

SUMMARY:Permaculture talk with Graham Burnett
DESCRIPTION:With over 25 years experience in permaculture this is your opportunity to hear more about Vegan Permaculture and ask questions to Spiralseed founder who is an artist\, publishes permaculture books\, and runs Permaculture courses as well as an activist for social and environmental justice. \nPermaculture is a design philosophy that mimics the relationships and systems found in natural ecologies\, emphasising the use of renewable resources\, diversity and cooperation to create sustainable communities and ecosystems. Underpinning all permaculture systems are fundamental ethical values around caring for the earth and its peoples\, as well as the fair and just distribution of resources. These fit well with the vegan philosophy of compassionate living and the precept of ‘do least harm’. In seeking to exclude the use of animal products and cruelty as far as is possible and practicable\, a veganic ‘take’ on permaculture asks whether it is enough to simply ‘care for’ our non-human fellow earth-citizens whilst our relationships with them continue to be exploitative\, or should we actively promote their recognition as self-willed beings with an intrinsic right to exist free from unnecessary harm? \nGraham Burnett is an artist\, writer\, permaculturist and community practitioner based in Southeast Essex. An activist for social and environmental justice since leaving school in the late 1970s\, he has regularly co-organised and taught permaculture workshops and courses for over 25 years\, working with projects and organisations including Comic Relief\, Bioregional\, Capital Growth\, Naturewise\, OrganicLea\, Birmingham Decoy\, Trust Links\, Green Adventure\, the Vegan Organic Network\, Empty Cages Design\, Thrive\, Metal\, Focal point Gallery\, Ars Terra (Los Angeles)\, Ekosense Eco Village (Croatia)\, NuArc (Puglia)\, Wild Earth (Kentucky)\, as well as a number of Transition Town initiatives.
