We are looking for a proactive and enthusiastic candidate to join our Eastern New Energy Programme delivery team. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and eager to assist other members of the team as they support businesses to make grant applications for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual to start their career in the environmental business support sector.

Purpose of role:

To provide high quality support to both the Eastern New Energy Grant Scheme team and potential beneficiary businesses. The successful candidate will work directly with the Grant Scheme team as they provide assistance and support to businesses applying for grant support for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. The role will aim jointly to ensure that the customer journey for grant applicants is as accessible and efficient as possible, as well as support the other Grant Scheme team members to promote the scheme and engage businesses; complete eligibility checks; support grant applications, facilitate grant claims, and ensure the project is managed in an ERDF compliant manner.

The Eastern New Energy programme aims to build a stronger Local Energy and Low Carbon Economy in the East of England. It will achieve this by providing support to a range of individuals and organisations, and by understanding and addressing the barriers to the decarbonization of communities, buildings, transport, and lives. The programme is led by the University of East London and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The programme launched in late 2020 and is due to close in mid-2023

This role will be 100% funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)

Based: This position will be based at PECT’s offices: Ham Lane House, Ham Lane, Peterborough PE2 5UU, with some home working considered.

Salary: £21,000-£24,000 based  on experience.

Closing Date for applications: 9th December 2021, although applications will be reviewed and scored upon submission and successful candidates invited for an Interview.

Start Date: January 2022

End Date: This is a fixed term contract that will expire on 31st December 2022

Hours/Week: 37 hours (although part time hours will be considered)

Work outside normal hours: Occasional evening and weekend work may be required (typically for events)

Reports to: Eastern New Energy Grant Scheme Project Manager

Key responsibilities:

  • Undertake a range of day-to-day project administration activities including management of beneficiary files, post, photocopying, etc. using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
      1. eligibility of beneficiaries
      2. state aid checks
      3. enter and maintain accurate data on the project CRM system.
      4. Support with evidence collection and reporting for funders.
      5. Undertake beneficiary tracking and monitoring and follow-up to obtain evidence/outcomes of C1 business assists.
  • Support businesses through customer care calls, relationship building, talking them through eligibility check, grant application and grant claim processes.
  • Ensure that all processes are completed in a timely, accurate and compliant manner at the prescribed quality in accordance with quality procedures and in line with ESIF requirements.
  • Support delivery of the SME Grant Scheme marketing strategy
    1. Prepare datasets for mailouts
    2. Support dissemination of social media postings
    3. Support at/help organise events/workshops as required
    4. Drafting of case studies
  • Liaise with relevant members of the delivery team, and others as required, to help organise and administrate Grant Panel meetings, ensuring that all the decision-making process is captured and recorded appropriately.
  • To maintain and continually improve their own knowledge of energy efficiency, renewable energy and wider issues of environmental management and sustainability
  • Work towards achievement of professional qualifications, such as membership with IEMA
  • Any other reasonable tasks requested by line manager

Person specification

Essential criteria:

  • Passionate about sustainability and about providing a professional quality service
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, ability to build and maintain relationships with people at all levels
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work effectively under pressure to meet targets and handle issues that arise
  • Ability to make decisions and act on own initiative; to self-motivate to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Good organisational and time management skills, ability to understand objectives and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing multiple tasks & activities at one time.
  • IT literate especially in Microsoft Office Software
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Able to work independently and use own initiative
  • Willingness to learn and undertake training where appropriate
  • Ability to travel to remote locations locally and to locations outside of the East region


    • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in an environmental, business or science related discipline
    • Experience providing excellent customer care.
    • Knowledge of resource efficiency and understanding of how organisations can improve their environmental performance.
    • Be committed to continuous professional development.
    • Experience of maintaining and developing administrative systems.
