Today (16th March 2026) the UK government announced a £53 million pot of financial help for households on heating oil – but what is available and how can you access the support? We’ve summed up the announcement below.
What was announced?
Today the Prime Minister announced financial support of £53 million for those whose homes are heating through heating oil, in light of the rising oil prices in recent weeks. Those on heating oil have seen their costs more than double, with a 500 litre refill now costing just over £600.
The assistance announced today is vital as those on heating oil are not protected by an energy price cap which shields electricity and gas households from sudden price increases, instead price fluctuations are reflected almost immediately in delivery costs.
In addition to the money announced, the government will ensure that heating oil suppliers are held accountable for providing reasonably priced oil. This will aim to eliminate excess profiteering and make sure households get a fair deal when heating their homes.
How will the help be distributed?
This money will be distributed through the Crisis and Resilience Fund, due to start on the 1st of April. Households with low incomes, those on means tested benefits and vulnerable families will be eligible to apply for financial assistance through this scheme.
PECT can support with referrals into this scheme, so a call with our energy advice team will allow us to help with your application. This will be inn addition to learning tips and tricks on how to reduce energy usage and make your heating oil last as long as possible.
