At this event you can learn about the traditional methods of making charcoal, as well as seeing demonstrations with a charcoal kiln. With charcoal production being one of the oldest chemical processes know to mankind, it is a very important part of our history, and is still widely used today.
There will be demonstrations with Hazel Woodland Products and activities to teach traditional crafts. Food will be cooked over an open fire.
“This will be a great interactive day for the whole family,” says Project Officer, Matthew Robinson. ‘You will be able to learn about the historical significance of the woodland as well as discovering heritage skills such as charcoal-making and green wood working.”
With a special thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund for their support with the project. Located on either side of Bretton Way, the wood was historically part of the Royal Rockingham Forest, which has been managed by our ancestors for at least 2,000 years.
