The volunteers undertook a number of surveys, included sampling Dissolved Oxygen, observing river conditions and photographing seasonal changes to the habitat across two sections of the brook near Dukesmead and Hastings Road. In addition, the team of volunteers collected around 12 bags of litter weighing around 80 Kg. In an arrangement with RiverCare, the bags of litter have now been removed by Peterborough City Council.
Marholm Brook RiverCare leader, Roger Proudfoot said: “I am really pleased with how much our enthusiastic volunteers achieved on our 2nd public event. It is really interesting to see how the brook is performing and very rewarding to see how much litter we have removed from the river environment. We hope to hold another similar event on Saturday 21st January 2017 and will confirm details for those who are interested in getting involved.”
A range of new river features were completed earlier this year as part of the Werrington Brook Improvement Programme. The data collected by the volunteers is being used to help assess how much these new features are helping to improve the Water Framework Directive status of the brook.
