New community green space planned for Friday Bridge

Nature

PECT is working with local partners and residents to help transform an underused site at Tower Hall in Friday Bridge into a welcoming, nature-rich community space. The proposed project will shape the future of the 8,200m² site, creating opportunities for people to connect with nature, grow food, learn outdoors and support local wildlife.

Supporting nature, learning and wellbeing

The vision is to create a flexible community asset that offers environmental and social benefits. Proposed features include:

  • community allotments and sustainable food-growing areas
  • an inclusive sensory garden for community groups
  • woodland areas for forest school and outdoor learning
  • tree and shrub planting to support biodiversity
  • composting, rainwater harvesting and the reuse of suitable materials

The new design

The existing site will be carefully assessed before detailed designs are developed. Ecological and site surveys will help identify natural features that should be retained, enhanced and integrated into the long-term vision for the space.

As part of this process, some areas of young growth may need to be managed to improve access, create space for community use and support a more diverse range of habitats. Wherever possible, materials arising from site management activities will be reused on site, contributing to habitat creation and reducing waste.

Climate resilience will also inform the design, including retaining tree canopy for shade, selecting planting suited to changing weather conditions and exploring sustainable water management measures.

A space shaped and managed by the community

Community involvement will be central to the project. PECT plans to work with residents, schools, community organisations, volunteers and local partners to understand how people would like to use the space and what would make it welcoming and accessible.

The ambition is for the green space to become a shared local asset that is shaped, used and cared for by the community. By combining food growing, outdoor learning, inclusive access and habitat improvement, the project aims to support wellbeing, strengthen connections between people and nature, and create lasting environmental value for Friday Bridge.

More information about community engagement activities and opportunities to get involved will be shared as the project develops.
