From January 2026, domestic energy bills have risen by 0.2% following Ofgem’s new energy price cap. While this is a slight increase, the good news is that the rise is based on the energy you use – meaning you still have the power to keep costs down.
By making simple changes at home, you can reduce your bills and your carbon footprint. Habits take time to build, but once they’re in place, the savings really add up. Here are some practical tips to get started:
In the Kitchen
- Defrost your fridge and freezer regularly – Ice build-up makes appliances work harder, using more electricity.
- Use residual oven heat – After cooking, leave the oven door open to warm the room.
- Boil only what you need – Fill the kettle for the drinks you’re making, not more.
- Try air fryers or slow cookers – These can be up to 75% more energy-efficient than traditional ovens.
- Wash on colder cycles – Lower temperatures and ECO settings save energy.
- Run full loads – Maximize efficiency by only using the washing machine or dishwasher when full.
- Air dry your clothes – Use an outdoor washing line instead of a tumble dryer to save energy.
Around the Home
- Turn down the thermostat – Just one degree lower could save up to £80 a year.
- Choose energy-efficient products – Opt for appliances with high energy ratings and switch to LED lighting.
- Take showers instead of baths – Keep showers to 4 minutes to reduce water heating costs.
- Unplug appliances – Switch off outlets when not in use to stop standby power drain.
- Close the tap – A running tap wastes up to six litres per minute.
- Insulate your home – Proper loft insulation prevents heat loss and lowers heating bills.
